Infant Curriculum

The Foundation Stage & Key Stage 1

The Infant Department caters for children in Reception and Years 1 and 2. The curriculum is based on National Guidelines for Key Stage 1 and all pupils in Year 2 take their Key Stage 1 tests in May.

The Reception curriculum is based on the seven areas of learning:

  • Personal Social & Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Maths Development
  • Literacy
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

The curriculum in the Infant Department is more subject based and offers a broader range. The subjects include:

Art – Drama – English – Geography – History – Maths – Music – PSHE – RE – Science

The children still have practical experiences within subjects as well as the more structured written work.


Specialist Subject Teaching

Some subjects are taught by specialist teachers and these are:

French – Computer Science – P.E

The core subjects of English and Maths are taught daily and great emphasis is placed on the importance of reading, spelling, handwriting, number bonds and tables. The children have homework each night which always includes reading, as well as a range of other tasks.
